In November 2013 the United Nations Secretary General declared Mali eligible to receive UN Peacebuilding Fund resources (PBF). In the context of its on-going partnership with the PBSO, PeaceNexus was requested to provide support to the United Nations in Mali to facilitate the programming of the PBF resources in order to maximise the peacebuilding impact.

Firstly, PeaceNexus assisted a review of the conflict drivers in Mali and identified potential entry points for intervention. Then, through consultations with the government, Mali’s civil society, financial partners and the UN family, PeaceNexus helped identify strategic zones of intervention in northern Mali. The selected zones were then assessed in order to establish the greatest potential for the overall stabilisation of Mali. Finally, in partnership with civil society organisation and local authorities, PeaceNexus’ expertise focused on designing the recommended approach to undertake peacebuilding activities in the zones identified.
