Crisis Management Initiative
The Crisis Management Initiative (CMI) is a Finnish organisation dedicated to preventing and resolving violent conflict through informal dialogue and mediation. Nobel Peace laureate and former President of Finland Martti Ahtisaari founded CMI in 2000, and it has become one of the leaders in this field. CMI is committed to long-term processes and collaboration with local partners. The organisation works closely with conflicting parties in some of the world’s most intractable conflicts and has ongoing programmes in the Middle East and North Africa, in the Sub-Saharan Africa and in Eurasia. In addition, CMI provides capacity-building and mediation support at different stages of peace processes, and uses its expertise to support the broader peacebuilding community.
CMI requested PeaceNexus organisational development (OD) support in 2014, to improve its monitoring and evaluation by introducing result based management (RBM) systems into its programming. With the help of an external expert, CMI has managed to include RBM in its systems. While this has brought CMI’s understanding of results to a new level and enabled CMI to better communicate them, it has also revealed the limitation of RBM for peacebuilding actors working on peace processes in volatile environments, a topic CMI is now engaging other actors in the field on.
In the 2016 organisational evaluation commissioned by the Finnish Foreign Ministry, CMI’s key donor, the organisation’s achievements in this regard are acknowledged, and one of the findings of the summary report is: “The assessment on RBM in this evaluation concludes that, in the case of CMI, a very appropriate degree of importance is given to the process of M&E as well as to the actual products.”
In a next step, CMI will use PeaceNexus OD support to address some issues that emerged due to the organisational evaluation and other review processes, further improve the way CMI measures, integrates and leverages results, with an emphasis on organisational learning and capacities.
