International Alert (IA) helps people find peaceful solutions to conflict. The organisation is one of the world’s leading peacebuilding organisations, with 30 years of experience laying the foundations for peace. Alert works with local people around the world to help them build peace, and advises governments, organisations and companies on how to support peace. The focus is on issues that influence peace, including governance, economics, gender relations, social development, climate change, and the role of businesses and international organisations in high-risk places.
IA asked for PeaceNexus Organisational Development support in 2014, to develop to a methodology to assess the impact of its advocacy and dialogue work. Measuring the results of such work is typically challenging since many actors are trying to influence institutions, and change is difficult to attribute to specific efforts. With the help of a consultant and a methodology shaped to IA’s needs, the organisation put its advocacy efforts vis-à-vis the Worldbank on a particular issue to a test as well as reviewed their dialogue work in Rwanda.
The findings have led to adjustments in IA’s advocacy and dialogue programming, and changes to their internal M&E practices. A presentation was also shared with other practitioners in the field.
