What is Conflict Sensitivity?
The United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) is an operational arm of the United Nations, dedicated to implementing projects for the United Nations System, international financial institutions, governments and other partners around the world. UNOPS manages over 1,000 peacebuilding, humanitarian and development projects for a range of partners.
UNOPS requested the support of the PeaceNexus Foundation to identify ways of strengthening conflict sensitivity within the organisation and establishing a roadmap outlying actions required to integrate conflict sensitivity in UNOPS operations. PeaceNexus supported a scoping study with recommendations for adapting UNOPS Project Management Methodology and developing tools for conflict sensitivity as the most relevant entry point. A joint mission to the South Sudan Operations Centre to analyse conflict sensitivity practices and provide recommendations on building capacity for conflict sensitivity resulted in a pilot to develop guidance and mainstream conflict sensitivity processes across the organisation.
UNOPS contribution to the International Project Management Day 2016 included a roundtable discussion about Conflict Sensitivity. Participants included representatives from key UNOPS partners in this area: Catriona Gourlay (Executive Director – PeaceNexus), Frederik Rosén (Senior Researcher – Danish Institute for International Studies), and Sarah Pickwick (Senior Conflict Adviser – World Vision).
