What does it take to move from ambition on gender integration to everyday practice? For peacebuilding organisations, this is not only a question of programmes. It is also about how we organise ourselves. The systems, processes, conversations and ways of working within our organisations can enable gender-responsive practice across different contexts.
It is this organisational dimension of gender integration that PeaceNexus and its partners have been exploring together over the past five years. We have been hosting a peer-learning group on gender integration since 2021, following a series of round-tables hosted with Conciliation Resources and CMI – Martti Ahtisaari Peace Foundation. In 2023, four small grants were also awarded to four organisations ready to strengthen gender integration within. Their entry points were different but their challenges were shared: a gap between awareness and application, uneven engagement across teams, difficulty translating tools into practice and challenges in sustaining progress over time. Dedicated efforts towards achieving greater internal alignment led to progress and new pathways of change. We are proud to be publishing today this Reflection Paper, in partnership with our four partners: the Berghof Institute, Saferworld, CMI-Martti Ahtisaari Peace Foundation and Peaceful Change Initiative, as well as the larger peer-learning group.
