PeaceNexus supports Article 109 to reflect and collectively design the governance mechanism for their vibrant and growing civil society coalition in support of UN Charter renewal.
The Partner
Article 109 is a new civil society organisation that serves as the Secretariat of a growing global coalition advocating for the convening of a review conference of the UN Charter, as provided for under Article 109 of the Charter itself. The initiative brings together civil society organisations, think tanks, youth movements, academic institutions, peacebuilding actors and concerned citizens to advance a more inclusive and equitable framework for global peace and security governance.
By mobilising civil society alongside policy influencers and UN stakeholders, Article 109 seeks to normalise the idea of Charter renewal without prescribing specific institutional outcomes. Its strategy prioritises coalition-building, agenda-setting and coordinated advocacy across regions, with a strong emphasis on inclusivity and participation. Through its network, Article 109 aims to catalyse a broader movement capable of generating the political momentum needed for UN Member States to support a Charter review conference.
Our Support
In a first exploratory phase, PeaceNexus is providing organisational support to Article 109 focused on the development and governance of its growing civil society network. The support aims to help Article 109 clarify how its civil society coalition is structured, governed and sustained, while remaining aligned with its values of participation, equity and shared ownership.
Article 109 is looking forward to partnering with PeaceNexus, an innovative player in peacebuilding, as we grow our coalition and build a movement towards renewing the UN Charter. We’re excited to draw on their experience as peacebuilders, who have a unique role to play in shaping the future of international relations.
